Education and engagement

Why we connect people with rivers

Bringing people together and connecting them with their local rivers and wetlands is essential to overcoming the growing challenges our society and environment face.

When people learn about and experience the sounds, colours, smells, and flows of healthy rivers, it creates a powerful ripple effect. This connection empowers individuals to have a voice and create positive change for the waterways they love.

How we get involved

At Norfolk Rivers Trust, we believe it is essential to help everyone establish and maintain a relationship with rivers. Our education and engagement work includes a variety of activities designed for all ages and interests:

  • School visits and river walks: We lead educational activities that get people out of the classroom and onto the riverbank.
  • Volunteer opportunities: We organise meaningful volunteer work, from monitoring river health to testing water quality.
  • Community events: We host and attend events to connect with the public and raise awareness about river and wetland conservation, as well as land management best practice.
  • Site tours: We offer behind the scenes guided tours of our beaver enclosure and river restoration sites to see our work first hand.
  • Collaborative partnerships: We use a community-led method to improve river health by bringing together local groups, organisations and businesses. This Catchment Based Approach (CaBA) uses local knowledge to identify challenges and develop solutions.
