Data and evidence

Evidence for action: Guiding river health

Healthy rivers depend not only on what happens on the land, but on how well we understand the connections between people, places and water across an entire river catchment or landscape.

We use reliable data and clear evidence to guide our actions - showing where pressures exist, where progress is being made, and where we can do better. Good information turns uncertainty into clear understanding, helping us care for rivers in ways that make a lasting difference.

Combining science, technology and local knowledge

Our Data and Evidence Team combines science, technology and local knowledge to understand what’s really happening in our river catchments.

We collect, manage and interpret environmental data that support projects across East Anglia - from landscape recovery and citizen science surveys to pre- and post-work monitoring.

We get involved at every stage, from designing how data is collected to creating the final tools. We provide this essential support by:
  • Mapping and analysis: Using advanced techniques to analyse data and create detailed, catchment-scale maps to identify pressures and trends.
  • Visual tools: Building user-friendly dashboards, story maps, and engaging graphics to make complex information accessible and actionable for our ourselves and partner organisations.
  • Data quality & training: Developing practical data collection methods and providing training to staff and volunteers, like citizen scientists, to ensure all evidence is high quality and consistent.
