Journey of a river

Project overview:

Working with schools and organisations across Norfolk to educate young people and help them build meaningful connections with their waterways through an immersive river journey.

The challenge:

The pressure on schools and students to perform, combined with limited facilities for practical experiences, less funding for educational visits, and low accessibility to natural spaces, creates significant barriers. These challenges disconnect young people from their surrounding landscapes and wildlife, leading to a decline in interest and compassion for our rivers and countryside. This disconnection can result in gaps in essential knowledge and a lack of awareness about conservation careers among young people.

The solution:

To help combat these challenges, we created the ‘Journey of a river’ excursion. Using the River Glaven — a 17 km chalk stream that rises from tiny headwaters in lower Bodham and Baconsthorpe and joins the sea at Blakeney Point — we guide learners along the river's course. Throughout the journey, we teach young people about river anatomy, biodiversity, and monitoring techniques. This supplements the school curriculum and fosters greater environmental awareness.

Through various funding pots, we also help with transportation as required.

The impact:

The ‘Journey of a river’ has proven to be an invaluable educational experience, offering unique opportunities to connect with nature in ways not always achievable within classroom settings. Teachers frequently talk about how our team’s knowledge and leadership make the experience smooth, engaging and fun for everyone, while meeting educational objectives.

“The fieldwork fulfilled the learning that the children needed to complete. Without Tim’s expertise and knowledge, we would not have been able to meet these learning objectives in a practical way. The children engaged with the activities and the learning objectives were met.” Cromer Junior School
