International Day of Action for Rivers 2026

March 14, 2026

Today, we’re celebrating International Day of Action for Rivers, a day that perfectly captures why we do what we do.

At our core, we believe that when rivers thrive, people and wildlife thrive too. By teaming up with local communities, land managers and partner organisations, we are working hard to improve the health of our rivers and wetlands, making them resilient for generations to come.

Bringing the River Stiffkey back to life at Fulmodeston

To mark the occasion, we’re looking back at one of our favourite recent success stories: the restoration of the River Stiffkey at Fulmodeston.

When we first started working on this stretch of water, it didn't look much like a river at all. It had been straightened, canalised and over-deepened, trapping the water in a trench and cutting it off from its natural floodplain. These changes reduced its ecological health and made it hard for wildlife to access the channel.

In 2023, we changed the story. Instead of a straight line, we carved out a meandering channel, accompanied by new scrapes and pools in the floodplain. This shift is creating a vibrant habitat where the river exists in harmony with the surrounding landscape.
